When The Weather Outside Is Frightful…

It has been a white week in Redmond! It looks like the City of Redmond has done a good job this year keeping up with the roads, but be careful out there!

Keeping Your Outdoor Landscape Healthy In Freezing Temperatures

Most everything out there is covered in white snow, and often times, if it is out of sight, it is out of mind. But there are some things you could be doing in your yard and driveway to protect yourself and your plants. Here is my small list of to dos during snow days:

Keep your driveway and walkways clear: Staying on top of the snow will keep you and your family from slipping. I know the last thing you want to do, is go outside and work, but it could save a broken arm, and also ensure you can get out of the driveway when you need to!

Insulate Your Outdoor Faucets: Hopefully you have already done this, but if you haven’t get out there and keep your outdoor faucets from freezing. You can go to many stores, and purchase an faucet insulator. Wrapping them with a towel and bungee cord does the trick as well. The last thing you want is frozen and cracked pipes!

Cover Your Plants: If you have any plants that you fear might not make it in these temparatures, you can always provide them with a protective layer of insulation. This keeps the snow off, but also keeps them slightly warmer, which could keep them alive through the winter temperatures.

Don’t Lock Your Brakes: I know, this has nothing to do with landscaping, and keeping your yard safe, but if you can avoid staying off the brakes, you can prevent an accident. Drive slow and give enough following distance, so you have plenty of time to stop!

While there may not be much lawn maintenance during these cold months, there are still some things you can be doing to protect your outdoor living space. Contact us if we can help with snow or protecting your yard this winter.

How To Prepare Your Yard For The Winter

Autumn leavesFall Landscaping

Around this time in the autumn months, growth starts to slow down. You might think that it is okay to slow down your yard maintenance as well, but there are some great things you can do during the autumn months to prepare your yard for the winter. Here are a few ideas and tips of things you could be doing right now to maintain your yards health through the winter.

Aerate and Seed

In Central Oregon, it is hard to keep up during the hot summer months. The grass gets fried and can become patchy with lots of traffic. Autumn is a good time to aerate your lawn and that got stressed from heavy traffic and sun damage.

Pruning

A heavy pruning is a wonderful idea to help prevent the ice and snow from damaging your trees and shrubs. Often times there is excessive and growth through the summer, and a fall cleanup is in order to get your yard looking great, just in time for the winter.

Winterize Sprinkler System

Once the temperatures get below freezing, you will want to winterize your yard. If you have a sprinkler system, mid October is a great time to have it blown out by a professional to remove all moisture and prevent cracking pipes. It is also a great time to put away your garden hose so that it doesn’t freeze outside in crack when the temperature warms up. Is also time to put away your patio furniture and insulate your exterior faucets. Give Neathery Landscape a call to help winterize your yard, or for a simple Fall Cleanup.

Leaves on the lawnLeaf Blowing

Of course, if deciduous trees buying your property. You will have leaves on the ground pretty soon. Staying on top of Leaf cleanup it Is a great way to maintain the health of your lawn. When the leaves get wet and soggy on your grass, it can prevent your grass from receiving the sunlight that it means, And will soon be taken over by the leaves.

Mowing

Grass appears to stop growing in early October, so you may be tempted to stop mowing. However it is good to continue mowing the lawn on a regular schedule even after the growth has slowed down. Most types of grass in Central Oregon actually arrive in this October climate because they are eating enough water, Yet it is still dry out. You may notice that Grass that was brown in the summer is turning green and is growing again. This is why it is important to continue mowing your lawn until the ground completely freezes for good. This can even be in to November.

During the autumn months, we stay very busy because of all of the leaves falling, Pruning, and winterizing that takes place in September and October. Please give us a phone call early if you are interested in having us blow out your sprinkler system, or maintain your yard, Or perform a one time fall cleanup.

Winterizing your Sprinkler System

Did you feel that last week? The air was cool, and the temperature dropped significantly in Central Oregon. The signs of autumn are here! This means a few things for your landscape. Grass, plants and shrubs are not going to be growing as much. And in a few weeks, you will want to blow out your sprinkler systems so they wont crack when we reach freezing temperatures, and will be be safe for the winter months. Here is a cool video that explains the process of winterizing your :

Winterizing your sprinkler is really important because you do not want any moisture left over in your sprinkler pipes over the winter months. If you do not blow out your sprinkler system, the water in your pipes will freeze, and your pipes will crack. That is bad news when you want to water your lawn again in the spring.

Even if you have an air compressor at home, this is probably not a job you can do sufficiently without a commercial compressor. Simple construction compressors will not have the flow to get all the moisture out of the system, and that is why it is important to call a professional landscaper to blow out your irrigation lines.

The team at Neathery Landscape will be offering a sprinkler blow out service at the end of September or early October for Redmond residents. Be sure to call us in advance so we can get you on the schedule, and ensure the protection of your landscaping!
